The warmer weather resulted in an excellent turnout for a hilly ride up to Toft Barn Cafe at the top of Greenhow.
Eleven riders assembled at Pool and eight riders sheepishly hid behind each other as Hamish tried to recruit members for the extra hilly SRAN ride.
The failed recruitment drive resulted in Hamish, Nathan and Dan heading off to beast each other up to Greenhow, leaving eight relieved looking AIR riders to set off at a more gentile pace.
A back injury put an early end to Ian’s ride and he decided to turn back.
The climbing started almost immediately as we made our way up the gated road, towards the top of Norwood Edge. Despite the hilly route, spirits were high and there was plenty of chatter among the riders. It was nice to welcome back the AOCC Women’s section and hear about her exploits in Scotland (sounded brutal – but well done Kim!).

After cycling uphill for 26 miles we arrived at the Cafe. We were relieved that Chris wasn’t with us when we saw the prices. The food however, was good and the conversation informative as always; David G discussing with Tom the weight of the Mazda MX5’s gear knob was just one highlight.
After a short conversation with the recently arrived SRAN riders, we were ready to make our way home.
The ride back was spectacular with some lovely descents. Dom, Alan and Nick took a sneaky shortcut at Hebden but we caught up with them at Bolton Abbey and the full AIR group rode back together to Ilkley.
We managed to avoid any of the rain, the only evidence of which were the wet roads we encountered towards Burnsall.
Two riders managed to make the traditional post ride drink at the Horsforth Brewery where salty snacks were added to the order.

The ride was 65 miles for me with 5400 feet of climbing. Another great ride, however the mood was dampened by the news that Dan had come off his bike and was heading to hospital. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Dan, from all at AOCC.
