Ride out to the coldest cafe in Yorkshire

There were four takers for a short, sunny, but cold ride out to Bolton Abbey. Everyone was on winter bikes, with Jimmy deciding to make things even tougher for himself by choosing to ride on 45mm gravel tyres.

We made our way at a steady pace to Bolton Abbey. Hamish made the uncharacteristic decision to amend the route and not cycle over Barden Moor.

After 20 miles we arrived at the cafe (the Joyful Deli) in Addingham. Initial impressions were very good, the cafe was in a beautiful old stone barn and the food looked great. However the main characteristic of old stone barns apart from the aesthetics, is that they are draughty and cold and this was no exception.

There is a reason that cavity wall insulation was invented…

By the time we left my teeth were chattering and I was glad to get outside to warm up.

Normally on an AIR ride I always jokingly suggest we head back over the hardest hill on the way home (usually Old Pool Bank). Unfortunately I forgot I was with SRAN riders and my suggestion of heading over the Cow and Calf was accepted immediately. Before I knew where I was, Hamish was disappearing into the distance up a 10% gradient. (Probably with a big grin on his face, however as I could only see his back we will never know.)

It was another great ride, and was well planned as we got back at 12.30pm in plenty of time to get glammed up for the AOCC Christmas meal. Distance was 39 miles for me with 2900 feet of climbing.

P.s Just got back from the Christmas Meal, it was good turnout with great food and enjoyable company. Thanks to Chris for organising.

Happy Christmas to all AOCC members!
